Shoulder Pain

Shoulder Pain Holding You Back? Let’s Fix It for Good.

We restore strong, stable shoulders so you can climb higher, lift stronger, and move overhead with total confidence. Real gym. Hands-on.

We get it

Shoulders are in every move.
It sucks when they hurt.

From climbing 14ers and hanging on the wall to pressing overhead in the gym, your shoulders are built for movement, not limits. Whether it is a sharp pinch on the pull-up bar, weakness that shows up mid-route, or pain that wakes you up at night, shoulder pain should not cost you the sport you love. We help you regain strength and confidence so you can move freely again.

Diagnosis

Mobility without stability is a problem waiting.

Your shoulders do more than you realize: they carry, stabilize, and power every move you make. Whether you are crimping on granite, paddling across Horsetooth, or finishing a clean and jerk, shoulder pain turns strength into hesitation. Most climbers, lifters, and athletes are told to rest it or take time off. For active people, that is not a plan. It is a setback.

Mobility outpacing stability is the most common root cause.

Shoulders are built for freedom, but that mobility comes at a cost. When mobility outpaces stability, which is common in climbers, lifters, paddlers, and overhead athletes, small stabilizing muscles cannot keep up. Imbalance leads to irritation, compensation, and chronic pain.

We go beyond the shoulder joint. Spine, ribs, scapula, and core all get assessed to understand why it happened and what needs to change.

Here is what we look for.

  • +Rotator cuff and scapular stabilizer weakness that cannot support the demands of climbing or lifting.
  • +Thoracic mobility restrictions that force the shoulder to compensate for lack of spinal rotation.
  • +Movement pattern breakdowns under fatigue or load that repeat the problem with every session.

Most people are handed a band exercise sheet and told to rest. For active people, bands and rest are not a solution. They are a delay.

We find the root cause.

Should I see a PT?

FIND THE CAUSE. FIX THE PROBLEM. GET BACK TO LIFE.

When you are dealing with shoulder pain, you might wonder whether you should rest it, get imaging, get an injection, or go straight to surgery. Here is what the evidence says and what we see every day.

PT is the most effective first step when:

  • +Pain with lifting, reaching, or overhead movements.
  • +Shoulder pain during workouts, sports, or daily activities.
  • +Stiffness or limited range of motion.
  • +Weakness or instability in the shoulder.
  • +Pain that has not improved with rest or basic home exercises.

Shoulder issues are often driven by strength imbalances, movement mechanics, and how the shoulder works with the neck, upper back, and core. By addressing these factors early, most people avoid unnecessary imaging, injections, or surgery. They return to training and daily life with more confidence and strength.

Talk to us first.

The Upslope Method

Four phases. One outcome.

01

Find the root cause

A deep dive into movement, strength, mobility, and the demands of your sport. We pinpoint exactly what is causing the pain. And why it keeps coming back.

02

Reduce pain, restore function quickly

Hands-on therapy, targeted mobility, graded loading. You feel relief in the first sessions, not the eighth. And you understand what changed.

03

Build strength, control & durability

Movement quality is restored. Now we build the foundation that keeps it. Real strength work in the gym, to restore your tolerance to load.

04

Unlock peak performance

Coached back through your sport-specific demands until you train with confidence again.

Patient story

Back to lifting, shoulder pain gone.

“I came in for shoulder pain, and after four or five sessions I was lifting without pain. Learning which muscles to engage and how the movement should feel made a huge difference.”

Worked on my hip and back with Kyle, he was great and will defenitly be recommending him in the future. Went to two other PT clinics before upslope and even though it was a bit pricey I felt I was getting by far the best treatment here. Loved working with the PT for a full hour and asking him questions throughout the week and during the sessions. Injury was a bit complicated, but I felt I was in good hands with how much time and available communication I had with Riley. I did not really love that they wanted you to pay upfront for how long they thought your recovery would take. I will say they did not oversell, and the length of time I paid for was pretty accurate to what I needed. And I understand they want people to be committed and paying upfront defenitly helps with that. However, not a fan of paying upfront for future appointments.

Dr. Ryley helped me develop a plan of strength training and mobility exercises that addressed the root cause of my chronic IT band pain. I climb mountains and backpack regularly, but have dealt with pain off and on for years. I had a bad flare this summer after summiting Mount Wilson with a miserable descent off the mountain. I decided to try physical therapy for the third time in the last 15 years with the hopes of finding someone who would give me a personalized and aggressive plan to treat my issues. Dr. Ryley did thorough assessments and physically challenged me with new strategies that finally gave me results. I recently completed 20 strenuous miles backpacking with no pain! I finally have hope that I can do the outdoor adventures I love without suffering after years of dealing with IT band pain and meeting with multiple specialists. Thank you Dr. Ryley and Upslope!

I am wrapping up my 3 month program at UpSlope with Dr. Frankie and I have never felt better or stronger. Dr. Frankie listened to my concerns and came up with a plan that has helped me consistently improve each week. The facility is functional, clean and welcoming. Allie, the receptionist is kind and helpful. My experience at UpSlope has been tremendous and I highly recommend this PT office to anyone who may be looking.

I highly recommend UpSlope and won't hesitate to return if the need arises. Nic was my P.T. and was able to fix my hip pain within the limited time I had before leaving on a rafting trip, as well as setting me on the right path for strenghtening my weak knees at home. It is fantastic to have this team of professionals local in Fort Collins to help you get back to feeling and moving better.

Questions

Before you reach out.

Do I need a referral?

No. Direct access in Colorado means you can come straight to us. No doctor visit first.

How long does shoulder rehab take?

Most people are back to full activity in 8 to 12 weeks. Post-surgical cases vary. We will know after the first session.

What sets you apart?

We train the shoulder under the loads that broke it. Overhead pressing, pulling, climbing-specific patterns. Band work alone does not rebuild a shoulder built for performance.
